Because They'er Young - Duane Eddy

With the air temperature still down as low as +4°C we were not expecting a Moth let alone
a First for the Year, and additionally a possible migrant, but who knows as far as the

 SILVER Y
is concerned
some are surely 'home bred'!
 Extra squalking from the
 KESTRELs
at daybreak was worth investigation as for a few days now there have been
suspicions of young ones in residence, but thus far not seen.
Yes, the same as last year 2 juveniles
and the femal certainly backwards and forewards without rest carrying prey.
 Anothr opportunity to experience
 KESTREL
in the hand as one of the party flew into the garden fish pond.
Once the Sun had done its work and warmed things up it was decided to
have a crack at one of the speciaist Moths hereabouts, the magical
Broad-bordered Bee Hawk Moth
Relient on one of the few Rhododendron bushs across the whole of the recording area
it is surrounded by dense and barbarous vegetation

but anyway the blooms were only ¼ open and not a sign of a Moth, but there was to be a bonus.
Hearing the familiar call of a
LESSER SPOTTED WOODPECKER

a search found an adult bird tending 2 yougsters among the
Birches and Sallows.
The views, which have only been seen once before in my longish birding career,
were all too short lived but worthy of regenerating that first experience which was photographed.
On information provided by another birder it was hightail across to
Okers Wood where these images were captured on 11/06/2009.

and a trio of other images taken across the property

in days gone by.
