Little Old Wine 'Drinker' Me - Dean Martin

Having just experienced more than 24 hours of sporadic and sometimes
heavy rain and the wind, occasionally reaching up to 30 knots and visiting just about every
point of the compass bar the 16 we were hoping for, between
South East and South West,

expectations of a decent catch from the Moth Traps was not high.
NEVER COUNT YOUR CHICKENS
as despite all of that there were still some additions to the
Year List such as:-

LACKEY

DRINKER

the fabulously big and beautiful

LARGE EMERALD

EAR MOTH
plus yet another

EYED HAWK-MOTH

We make no apology for the quality of the following images/footage,
as it is difficult enough for me to see a

WREN
let alone get it in the view-finder

and as they are juveniles to boot

we consider it something of a privileged to have seen them.

Also in Harbins Farmhouse Garden along with the Wrens have been the

usual common fare:-

BLACKBIRD

GOLDFINCH

in waiting and

on the feeders,

juvenile

BLUE TIT

along with

a decent number of

COLLARED DOVE,

but no sign of any juveniles yet, and the odd

CHINOOK

to shatter the tranquillity.

A little further afield we found our first

LARGE SKIPPER

of the year plus a

SMOOTH SNAKE

which have, by and large, been keeping a very low profile.

The Kids Are Alright - The Who

We have just enjoyed yet another splendid week-end of

mainly Wild-Lifeing, but all work and no play makes Jack a

U NO WOT,

so we made sure things were punctuated with a good deal of BBQ'ing,

decent wine, gay (not to be confused with homosexuals who STOLE the

word that used to relate to the 'vast majority' of us) repartee and airy badinage.

On one day alone, we took 374 images (of the same subject managing to salvage

just a single legible one) plus a host of video clips which we hope to bring to you

in the very near future.

DUSKY SALLOW

YELLOW SHELL

ROSY RUSTIC

BROAD-BARRED WHITE

and while these 'Hawks' have already appeared through these pages

this year, they are always worth showing again when we see them.

PINE HAWK-MOTH

and a comparison between

SMALL ELEPHANT HAWK-MOTH (l) and

ELEPHANT HAWK-MOTH
and at long last a 'first for the year'

BALSAM CARPET
which going by its dark appearance is from a 'Second Generation'
which certainly fit with 2016 when again there were no 'First Generation' Insects caught!

DOR BEETLE

an occasional visitor to these pages would not have been shown again

save for the fact that is was found up-side-down.

In an attempt to right itself it showed a smart iridescent blue

thought worthy of a still and a clip and was released at the end of the

performance on an even keel.

There has been some conjecture over the past few days as to whether the

New Platform, constructed by the Little Grebes at the Irrigation Pond is in

fact a third nest or simply a 'raft'. All will be revealed!

Now showing a little more interest but still not totally sure.

Then a bit of a tidy up before a swim.

Reshaping the 'bowl' of the nest before

settling down.

And even more Good News as we arrived at the goat enclosure

to see the surviving twin

BAGOT GOAT

still thriving and

SUCKLING

but at the far end another sight for sore eyes as another

KID (A)

had arrived

overnight.

High Flying Bird - Jefferson Airplane

While out in the field things have become somewhat subdued,
the result of the usual mid-Summer Doldrums, the
Moth Traps continue to return Insects of some interest such as
Firsts for the Year

CANARY-SHOULDERED THORN

YELLOW-TAIL

DARK UMBER

and just for the hell of it as being such a fine specimen
(similar to its captor)

BUFF-TIP

SCARCE FOOTMAN

note the 'rolled' wings, and

GREY ARCHES

Juvenile

PIED WAGTAIL

are now appearing in good numbers,

probably indicative of yet another successful breeding season,

but still mostly under the watchful eyes of the parent birds.
Followed in fairly quick succession by 2 bits of
Very Good News both from the Heath.

While they have still been in residence

DARTFORD WARBLER
have been extremely elusive over the Spring

but during the week we were able to capture on film this juvenile
proving breeding as they have historically here.

Additionally to that, and only the second of this family group
to ever have been found across our
Recording Area

PYRAMIDAL ORCHID
Also there and now popping up all over the place a

CATERPILLAR TENT
which we are told can,on occasion, cover areas of several feet.
Alternatively there has been no sign thus far of

STOCK DOVE
doing the business although there is no shortage of birds.

Finally and a little belated (must try and get out of the 'cutting room' more often) as promised
here are the images of the Aircraft we presumed were entertaining the crowds at this years
Goodwood Festival of Speed.
