Leaving on a Jet Plane - Peter, Paul and Mary

 A more than welcome start to the new day as at 00:30 precisly the first, and distant, Little Owl of the Autumn burst into that very familiar and screeching song which was penciled in for further investigation later in the day. Priority must always be with the Moth Traps as releasing these little critters without damage and following a spell of temperatures sometimes as high as +18°C a plummet to just +8° seemed to do the buisenes with

c2 VESTAL's

which come in a variety of shades from

deep pink to pale yellow,

along with another eye-catching beauty

PINK-BARRED SALLOW
both duely added to the Year List.
and while they have been operating from here for a few months now

this is the first time we have had an

EASY JET

in the view-finder and while on the subject

we did secure a couple of images of the runway at

BOURNEMOUTH INTERNATIONAL RUNWAY
looking arcross the adjoining heath from east to west.

Otherwise, this might just be the last

COMMON WHITETHROAT
we see until late April 2022

but feel there should still be a couple or so waves of

WHEATEAR

before Autumn ends.
Another

SMOOTH SNAKE

unusually on the top of one of the covers, instead of beneath,
maybe trying for those last few rays before hibernation begins?

Under, were the usual combination of

SLUGs

and

SNAILs
and leaving us with a striking pose from the 3 larger Goats

FRENCH ALPINE to the fore along with the c2 OLD ENGLISH.

(we thought we had seen the last of them)

and a

BLACK and ORANGE SEXTON BEETLE

 

 Otherwise, a variety of Fungi is starting to appear

with the splendid

FLY AGARIC
taking the lead while

GOLDEN WAXCAP

bring up the backing vocals while
keeping things at a low key one of c3 dead

RABBITs
but with no visual signs of myxomatosis - Thankfully!

 If there is one thing that has amazed us this Autumn thus far it is the daily presence of the magical

YELLOW WAGTAILs

(juvenile)
which have touced down in the garden for the first time, knowingly, ever

while continuing to over-fly on a daily basis ever since and if there were but one

of the more common Moths that we would all like to capture annually sure it would have to be

CLIFDEN NONPAREIL

which we secured yesterday

with the 'Nonpareil' element of the name meaning

"Without Equal"
we'll drink to that, while the

extremely variable

LUNAR UNDERWING
also joined the still extending Year List.
Otherwise, quiet at the traps as hampered by yet another puncture not allowing us to get to the Heath.

A most scarce sighting of one of the 'under the caravan' resident

SHORT-TAILED VOLEs
(no doubt looking for scraps that we put out for them)
was considered a bonus while at the Irrigation Pond it was doubtless our own coughing and spluttering that brought the semi-resident

into full voice from the deapths of this

Overgrown Ditch.

Absent for a few weeks now it was also welcome to see the odd

MEADOW PIPIT

knocking about again and to end that particular wander a

GATEKEEPER BUTTERFLY.
