Yet another lunch date today with a
couple of disappointing sights en-route. As most readers know the
Melcombe Regis Cemetery is considered a 'local patch' as far as birding
is concerned so was unhappy to receive notification during my absence of
this act of vandalism there.
Even given the prompt I was not ready for what met my eye on my way to the bus.
One of the Chapels of Rest has been completely gutted by the arsonist - IS NOTHING SACRED?
Further
on at the Westham Road underpass there was something far more pleasing
as the 'illegal graffiti had been replaced by a far more artistic
version that I can only guess has the blessing of the Borough Council.
Depicting the 'white horses' (waves) that crash onto Weymouth Beach from
time to time and the towns vibrant Music Scene was just a started for
ten.
There were also designs relating to the upcoming Olympic Games and our local Tourist Trade
along
with an etching of one of our favourite Public Houses the Rock Hotel
and a flashback to the days when a Steam Train plied a nearby route.
Irony of ironies followed as it was noticed that even despite the
unwritten rule among graffiti artists themselves, never to deface
anothers work some lout had methodically scratched the motto Olympic
S**te along the full run of the painting - WHY OH WHY?
Always guaranteed to lift my spirits a pleasure to see the HOODED MERGANSER.
Anyway,
it's an ill wind that doesn't blow some good, and I soon arrived at the
tiny village of Nottington, lunch being with my friend Lesley and some
of her friends. Lesley's new home can just be seen peaking through the
trees, so how coincidental that along the line of tree once stood my
first home in Dorset. Back in 1959 there stood on this site an old and
leaking World War II Nisan Hut which we called home for a year.
The friends Trevor and Teresa Scott, on holiday from South Africa and local lady Liz Nash were already arrived,
so it was just left to me to join them in the kitchen.
After
a lovely lunch we took a stroll over an area that as a boy I knew like
the back of my hand - another great day. Finally, an update on the Stat
Counter highlighting numbers of readers throughout the world. Numbers
have continued rise at a great rate, with 2 countries well into the
'thousands' while a further 42 sit firm in the 'hundreds'. It would be
fantastic to see those in the lower reaches 'further up the chart', so
why not take this opportunity to highlight
The Bagsy Blog Link on your Facebook Account, Twitter, E-Mail Addressees etc.
Thank You in anticipation.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up about your comments column, forgot to look for it but I do read your blog quite frequently and find it very interesting and strangely compelling!
The RSPB is a massive organisation created to defend and conserve, in a public way, the encroachment and gradual erosion of habitat for our bird population along with lots of other major Nature organisations and for that we should be thankful. We can't just leave nature to look after itself, it doesn't work, we need to have large bodies like the RSPB to stand up to Governments or Councils who have more pressing concerns and priorities for the local areas we try to preserve.
But I don't need to stand up for the RSPB, they can do that themselves, what I do need to comment on the though is the pettiness you show for the people who are trying their damnedest to keep Radipole and Lodmoor alive and prospering for the future.
You seem to have a personal vendetta against Nick, Luke and Nick (sounds like a '70s pop group) who have been tasked to protect and develop the Reserves, not just for ardent birders like yourselves but for future generations who will become you.
Shame on you Bagsy, I thought you were better than that, and look how many people you are influencing and poisoning with your sharp words and biased opinions.
I know how much effort these people have put into their jobs and how dedicated they are to preserving our habitats and have just as much respect for them as I do for your very popular blog.

ReplyDeletePoint taken, I don't 'know' you but I do know from reading your excellent blog that your general attitude to fellow humans is always of the highest regard, as is your affection for birding in our local area (and around the world). There won't be many people in Dorset more qualified to express opinions on our wildlife heritage than yourself (although you would probably modestly disagree).
ReplyDeleteWhich is why I found your vitriolic outburst such a shock. In the interests of balance I felt I had to express my dismay and disappointment at your unnecessarily caustic comments to people and an organisation that I think don't deserve them.
That being said I will continue to enjoy your daily wanderings and start using sunglasses to see if they make a difference to my clouded judgement!
Sing on Bruce (my preference!).

ReplyDeleteSo, sorry to have failed to reply to your comment. No excusses just a failure. Thanks for taking the time to write and hope to hear from you again soon. Best Wishes Bagsy
