Datura stramonium
Not a very nice plant by all accounts, this is what Wikipedia has to say about it
Known by the common names Jimson Weed, Devil's Snare or Datura,
it is a plant of the Nightshade Family. It is believed to have
originated in the Americas, but is now found around the world. Other
common names for D. stramonium include Thorn Apple, Moon Flower, Hell's Bells, Devil’s Trumpet, Devil’s Weed, Tolguacha (in Spanish), Jamestown Weed, Stinkweed, Locoweed, Pricklyburr and Devil’s Cucumber.
For
centuries, datura has been used as a herbal medicine to relieve asthma
symptoms and as an analgesic during surgery or bonesetting. It is also a
powerful hallucinogen and deliriant, which is used spiritually for the
intense visions it produces. However, the tropane alkaloids
which are responsible for both the medicinal and hallucinogenic
properties are fatally toxic in only slightly higher amounts than the
medicinal dosage, and careless use often results in hospitalisations and
deaths.
Note:- If I am not here tomorrow please continue without me!

Well, if the New World gave you the Thorn Apple, you have 'returned the favour' by giving us purple Loosestrife, a real problem in parts of Canada
ReplyDeleteMorning dfaulder - We have 25 Canadian (Edmunton) family visitors here at the moment, so let's call it EVEN! They are having a great time but leaving today.

Haven't got to your neck of the woods yet but the AlCan 3 times and over to the east Montreal to Toronto (fine city and The Cowboy Junkies) and down to the Falls.
ReplyDeleteHowever, did work for a Canadian Company for 12 years out of Calgary so that must make me 'part' Canadian? Thanks for tuning in Doug and will be watching for your comments! Pass the Link on if you will!
