Learning to Fly - Pink Floyd

While my day started off as usual tending the Moth Traps, it might be a nice change for some to start on a different topic? Over the past few days there has been a build up here of less usual air traffic and it's not even Bournemouth International Airport Air Show Day yet.
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought, I thought of everything
No navigator to find my way home
Unladen, empty and turned to stone
A soul intention -- that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
 A EURO-FIGHTER TYPHOON
has landed and taken off on at least a dozen occasions while the
 RED ARROWS
Aerobatic Display Team
Have shown a presence on 3 of the last 5 days.
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss
Can't keep my mind from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

 This old DAKOTA
 shown previously
is still being seen on a regular basis
 while this aircraft,
looking every bit like a Russian,
has been seen but once and still we don't know what it is.
I feel sure someone will tell us won't they Roy?
COASTGUARD AIR-SEA RESCUE HELICOPTER
another blast from the past a Royal Navy
 SEA VIXEN
It is infrequent, to say the least, to see a
JUMBO JET
take off or land at Bournemouth and I managed to miss both.
All that was captured was the tail-plane as it taxied to the stand.
So, at long last I hear you say, here are a few items from today's catch.
DWARF CREAM WAVE
SMALL BLOOD-VEIN
V-PUG
FAN-FOOT
SYCAMORE
DOUBLE LOBED
SMOKY WAINSCOT
DARK SWORD-GRASS

CRANEFLIES
DEAD HEAD HOVERFLY
Myathropa florea
Lots of early morning young
Swallows

  1. Hi Paul, yes the old Russian AC is a Yakovlev Yak 11 trainer.
The Sea Vixen was of course from 899 Fleet Air Arm Squadron (The Flying Fist)
899 was a front line squadron on HMS Eagle (Proper Aircraft Carrier) hence the 'E' on the tail. It was based at Yeovilton when not aboard.

  2. Now, there's a surprise! I knew someone would let me know but........ Great to hear from you again Roy and did suspect the 'Red Star' aircraft was a Russian. Thanks as ever and All the Best to you and yours.

  3. Asafoetida is an ingredient used in Asian cookery (I use it when cooking pulses - stops farting!)

    From Wikipedia:

"May also be used as a moth (Lepidoptera) light trap attractant by collectors—when mixed by approximately 1 part to 3 parts with a sweet, fruit jelly."

If you try it, let me know if it makes any difference.

  4. Thanks for that Grampy and for the near future will try a dose myself - which should help. Hopefully later I can try some in the field and also pass the tip on to my cohorts. Good to hear from you and THANKS - Bagsy
