Hideaway - Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich

OK, there have been one or 3 overnight frosts but in general in has been unusually mild, and considering it's now a few days past January 15th and a ½ meteorologically speaking we are well past the mid-point of winter. Maybe we'll get a nice 'flurry' in July? Talking of the frozen stuff, we did as usual put out some
'snap' for our feathered friends
as it was said to get chilly overnight. Unfortunately, for the birds that is
REYNARD
hoovered up all the left overs during his nightly rounds.
As ever we did take a look around the Common and Heath
but apart from the beauty of the
 frost bedecked
SILVER BIRCHES
it quickly became obvious they were not going to throw up a
lot more so we  cut our losses and headed for
There too things were not exactly brimming with Wildlife but a hour in the
Tern Hide.
overlooking Ibsley Water, did produce
a pair (male) of
GOLDENEYE
Not that we haven't had our quota already in Dorset there was also
a most obliging
GREAT WHITE EGRET
along with a
CORMORANT
(bathing) across the road. Also there, and now at the woodland hide,
we were hoping for a trio of passerines to add to the Year List
and were not disappointed with first of all
SISKIN
GOLDFINCH
already seen this year
REDPOLL
extremely thin on the ground so far this winter,
a couple of lovely
MOSSY MOOTS
 Within the woodland Flow'ry gladed
by the oak tree's mossy root.
The shining grass blade timber shaded
now do quiver on the foot.
And birds do whistle overhead
and water's bubbling in its bed.
And there for me the apple tree
do lean down low in Linden Lea.
William Barnes (Dorsetshire) lyric, Ralph Vaughan Williams music.
followed by another
SISKIN
which, shall we say, was more au naturel.
Lastly from that hide a
BRAMBLING
(unfortunately the windows are 'fixed' smoked glass here)
which seem to have got far more scarce as the years have gone by,
and to make our day a bird that has been unusually absent at our
Recording Area
so far this year a most welcome
