At a local level with rare and 'firsts for the year' Birds aside there is little here that gives us more pleasure than a 3 x Woodpecker Species Day! Thus far in 2017 this has not happened once, nor twice with the complete hat-trick being completed just a couple of days ago. Two of these not over easily accomplished visions came from within the bounds of our Recording Area while the third was at Oakers Wood no more than a 40 minutes drive from Slight Return II. On one of those occasions, a morning when the Moth Traps produced a 'blank', our first interesting sighting was this redundant fuselage of a
BOEING 737 AIRLINER
We say redundant but that is not quite true as poking my nose in it was found
to be destined for an undisclosed location to be used for Cabin Training.
Not surprisingly on the first occassion
GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER
was first out of the bag as in recent days either their drumming, rauchous calling
or the birds themselves have been recorded on a daily basis.
Early Flowering
ORNIMENTAL CHERRY
and while not a first sighting for the year this
GREY WAGTAIL
was the first for the Tributary which forms part of the
Airport Ballancing Pond.
As for
LESSER SPOTTED WOODPECKER
they have been heard more often than seen
but any indication that they remain on site is enough to encourage a chance of breeding.
SOUTH DOWN X BREED EWES and LAMBS
have once again been brought to the Solar Panel Compounds along with a number of
WELSH MOUNTAIN CROSS BRED EWES
Having not see Jack Street the Shepherd we no not how many but
somehow look a lot fewer than the 500 head residing here last season.
We, that is Ewe and I, await an update.
RAYNARD
has also started putting in the odd appearance
with this being
the second of three thus for recorded.
The third of our hat-trick
GREEN WOODPECKER
was, as usual, found enjoying
whatever spoils are thrown up from the
Lawn Tennis Court
right outside my window.
